Okay, I also do use AI, I use it in programming and in my writing.

And you know what, I feel shy saying that out loud, and this is true to the extent when I have a chatbot tab opened on my computer and someone else comes in without notification, immediately I will close it so as he won’t see that I’m using AI.

But why?

Because people will think I’m dumb. And at the same time, I can’t show off the things I have done by using AI, as it will make me look like I have cheated in an exam and managed to get away with it.

For me this is so deep, I even feel ashamed of myself.

But wait, the more I have been thinking about this the more I have realized there is something else behind. I have come to see there are two ways we are using to view AI, and maybe with one of them we can all kill this “unfair” shame we have been dealing with:

1. “The Dumb” vs “The smart one”

There are few smart people who even before the era of ChatGPT, they were shining on the top and for sure we did bow to them for a very long time. Of course, we also admired them and wanted to be like them. Look, whenever I was stuck on something there was this guy the smartest of all I would call and ask him for help and depending on the extent of my problem I would even sit down on mud if he asked me to, just for him to fix my problem.

But in early 2023 ChatGPT destroyed this monopoly, now I don’t need to beg, I just need a prompt to get what I need.

But this destruction had its side effects: The one who was “dumb” deeply always had envy towards the smart one, and now after getting a tool which can make him literally “smart” he has started to brag too (consider it as a payback time)

On the other hand the smart one who lived his whole life with glory (as we worshiped him), has turned angry. With more ego he becomes more irritated seeing even the “dumbest” people are now pretending to be smart. He has jealous towards the tool (ChatGPT) as it has made people who once respected him, now they just ignore him. So as a result, he started to attack the tool calling it stupid but deep down he only wants to discourage people from using it so as they can come back to bow to him again.

2. The “entrepreneurs”

There are also other set of people who approach AI as “entrepreneurs”. And with entrepreneurs I literally mean all people who generally want to accomplish great things.

But who are entrepreneurs?

Entrepreneurs always wants to win the market and make more profit in their ventures. If something can give an entrepreneur a cheap raw material at the same quality, he will surely go for it. If something doesn’t seem profitable in the market they will change course. They always do anything, taking any opportunity coming their way to even make more profit.

If you laugh at them when they are collecting scrap metals in the street, ooh boy, just continue laughing at them but what you might not know they might be making more money.

Entrepreneurs always know what they are doing, they know the risks and downtown effect of what they are trying to do, but the key thing which make them stand out the most is their courage to act on any opportunity strategically.

The people with entrepreneurship spirit, are the ones who see things objectively: that what can AI give me now, so as I can move faster, I can operate cheaply, I can get more profit instead of more loses.

Okay, now let’s look at AI objectively as real entrepreneurs

What we shouldn’t forget is that AI is a machine, like any other machines they just simplify work, after all this was predictable from the start, if you ask any programmer or someone obsessed with technology, they always want ways to make things easier with tech even if what they already have is a lot. By this it’s clear AI was coming.

We moved from typewriters to MS words, manual bells to electronic bells, even in programming itself, we started with 0 and 1, but some guy was tired of it and now we have countless programming languages.

AI was definitely coming too: moving from having knowledge and thinking ability in brains to computers. It’s just technology couldn’t catch up fast back then, but the goals had always been the same: to have your legs crossed while not doing the mundane tasks and instead outsourcing them to a machine to do it for you.

AI is a tool, and so it should be treated like that and be used very well (to simplify work).

As entrepreneurs we will say: it should be used well with the aim of making more profit instead of driving more loses to you. If you use it in a way which bring loses to you now or even in the future, then you are not a real entrepreneur.

Again, you need to look objectively what can you gain from this tool and what can you lose depending on the way you are using it.

How can AI elevate your life and how can it destroy it.

I think this is the best way of viewing AI instead of the egocentric view full of jealousy and envy, even if you consider yourself “smart” or have been labelled “dumb”.

Now as an entrepreneur, what loses can AI cause to you:

—YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DATABASE

One of the fascinating things about our brain is that it’s always painful to learn something new, there is more discomfort associated with doing that. As a result, most of the time we have these tendencies of running away from anything with traces of discomfort associated with learning. It requires one to summon oneself and start to see this pain as a normal thing to get the most from learning.

But now we have AI, with enormous amount of knowledge you might use at any time, with more skills to do stuff for you without the need to know them. That’s great because it relieves us from learning stuff when pain or time loses from the process is not feasible for the moment.

But here is the thing in some cases of your life you will need to remember facts or even insights or have certain skills so as to continue with the next course of action. If you have nothing in your brain database, then that becomes a problem.

Too much outsourcing of knowledge and skills somewhere else in a manner, which is not strategically will leave you dependant to them and make you not able to act on your own in situations where you can’t get access to these knowledge and skills tools.

This can even be detrimental to you causing opportunities to slip between your fingers or even worth disappoint people as you couldn’t recall or do something when they depended on you.

As an entrepreneur forcing yourself to learn crucial stuff and skills so as you can have them readily available in your brain at any time will become a strategic move, and this is for the sake of your future in situations where you will not have access to AI.

—CRITICAL THINKING FOR PROBLEMS SOLVING

The basis of critical thinking is that you have a problem, and you are required to think real deep to come up with a solution or the next move.

As we are thinking we usually go through this question: Among the things I know, which one can I use even in combination with others so as I can use them as a solution to the challenge I’m facing right now.

“What you know” + “choosing one of them / connecting dots” ⇒ “a solution”

Deep down this requires you to have a deeper understanding of the things you know. If you know it deep you will then know that bottom corner of it can fit to the top hole of that other thing you know and then boom! you have your solution.

But at the same time this deeper understanding is amplified if you have used that knowledge many times, this way you can see the solution clearly, because you are familiar with the patterns.

Critical thinking then just becomes a game of looking at what you know and then look for ways how one of them can be applied in a particular way to solve your problem, and the more you do this game the more you get good at it, and the reverse happens too, if you don’t do it.

The limiting factors in critical thinking are the amount of knowledge you possess and deep understanding of them, and your ability to connect dots between them.

Now we have plenty of knowledge from AI and it can even quickly connect dots to see what might become the best solution to your problem.

But still the same question comes again, do you still have your own critical thinking when you are forced not to rely on AI or when AI can't give you the best critical thoughts?

All these are still based on: As an entrepreneur you need to be able to think critically when you are on conditions where you will not be able to access AI, and at that moment it might be your opportunity to make more profit than others. So, developing the ability to think critically on your own is very essential in your ventures

What can AI give you as an entrepreneur

—SPEED

There are things before took days to complete now with AI we have started to talk in minutes scale. Imagine how many products can be shipped with this, imagine how much time you can save and use it to work on other crucial stuff.

Just with speed it can make you be far away from your competitors.

If you want to win in entrepreneurship, speed should be your ally, and AI has given us that.

—CHEAP RAW MATERIALS

Just a tool condensed with PhD level knowledge, skills to do things as masters. But before you had to pay someone, you had to invest more time to get knowledge and skills commodities for your ventures. Now the price of that has decreased disruptively.

Now it’s clear, it has become cheap to do things, what’s remain is your courage to try out things.

How to use AI (as an entrepreneur)

As an entrepreneur with the aim of maximizing profit, I think these are the major ways which we can use AI for more advancements in our ventures:

1. As Explainer

There are a lot of things we don’t know, but luckily enough we have managed to get a tutor just in our pockets. Anytime there is something you don’t know you can use AI to get a better specialized teaching, and apply the knowledge and skills obtained to generate more profit.

2. For Automation

Again, as an entrepreneur AI is a tool, I can’t waste my time and energy using hoes to farm a small area while there are tractors which can do more than that with more assurance of more profit.

As a rule, whenever AI can do a job efficiently which was used to be done manually, I’ll let it do it.

Remember speed and operation costs are two essential parameters which we always need to optimize if you need to be successful in this business.

If you won’t use it, smart entrepreneurs will do.

Now I know, there will be a following up question here:

If AI can do all the jobs which I can do, what will I do?

The answer is simple though it’s too clouded with fear of being jobless:

You will do what AI cannot do.

And this is not something new, it has always been this way with technology:

Once a certain task is automated it makes us realize there are new or other tasks remains mundane and we struggle with a lot, so the cycle begins again trying to automate that too.

There are a lot of things AI cannot do now, your task as an entrepreneur is automating those which can be done with AI and focus on the rest as from those it’s where your competitive advantage will be.

Now this one is for me as an aspiring technologist: In tech the real opportunity I see is on improving AI to be even better, making better tools which uses AI, there are many hard-core parts of software engineering which currently AI can’t do, so it’s not “doomsday” for software engineers as how it’s proclaimed out there.

This automation role with AI opens up another role: A manager of AI tools

You will need to be the one who, have a vision on what you want to accomplish, instructs AI tools to automate tasks for you, assess the outputs of AI if they are as intended and implement the outputs of AI.

This is the new venture, which brings the reason why you should know these things early, because it's where the world is going right now.

3. Cross checker of your work

AI has all the knowledge, all the best practices and more, we can use it to check on what we have been working on, for critics and suggestions for improvement. With this the work you are doing gets even more advanced.

4. As a Templates builder

Now if AI can do most of the parts quickly and efficiently, there is no need to use more time in those.

The right way I see in which we can take advantage of this:

We can let AI build quickly the layouts of what we are trying to do up to the point where it has no skills to do well, and then our task becomes doing few changes on parts we don’t want and add the parts AI can’t do (as we have already got the template).

With templates we become the extender of where AI ends with its power, with that we leave more space for us to focus on the most crucial parts, and we will be able to move faster.

And yes, though AI is great, currently it’s not that great, but it’ll keep getting great with time, so make sure to cross check AI outputs to avoid having your work destroyed.

GOING MANUAL DELIBERATELY WITHOUT AI

I don’t know your house, I don’t know which room have a titled floor, due to fault designs.

Why?

Because I never lived there, even if you give me its map or pictures and videos until I get familiar with it well, it won’t be the same compared to when I have lived there in a year.

That’s the same experience you’ll have when you have built things with your own hands for many years. The next time someone do it for you, you’ll immediately be able to tell what was made good and what was bad. No one can lie to you on this. If you had never built something yourself, you won’t have the same experience as this even if you read it or had countless tutorials on it.

There is something special in building or living an experience, I don’t see a compatible substitute for this. Being physically present in these it’s like it's giving you a different set of eyes which makes you see clearly every pattern and every details. These kinds of eyes are not made with just going theoretical with stuff, or making someone else do it for you without you knowing anything.

This is why managers lose touch of what they are managing if they never touch it multiple times, operators and supervisors are always the best people to trust on this.

The same effect appears when you use AI to do things for you. If you automate things you don’t know there is less valued and more polished output generated compared to when you use it to automate things you know.

This is the same as when you hire someone to do cleaning at your house; you’ll surely know if the person has really done a great job or not.

Don’t use AI to automate things you don’t know how to do yourself. This is dangerous especially in situations where you are required to be the core part of showing or using what AI has generated for you. If there was an intended observations and you couldn’t know about it, that won’t be good in your favour for sure.

The only time when you can use AI without the need of knowing what it does it’s when it has become “serveless”, that it doesn’t cost or jeopardize you anything for not knowing the output generated. This is only possible when there is 100% assurance of the output of AI that it's always correct (but for now we are not there yet)

—Serverlss is the concept in wed development where you don’t need to set up your own server or even knowing how to maintain it, you just pay and then everything is done for you, and you not knowing anything at all on how it operates it doesn’t affect you.

Why you should still keep on doing things manually on the side and at the same time automating fully with AI?

1. With time you’ll loose touch with the things you are automating. Doing things manually is a way to strengthen and reboosting your skills set.

Even if you already have expertize, in what AI is automating for you, I still suggest we should have a ritual of doing things manually too.

If you don’t use it you lose it

2. You become a better AI manager by doing things manually.

Avoiding losing your skills is not enough, going manual also makes you understand better what you are building and as a result improves your automations as it makes you instruct AI well to give you better results, it also makes you detect quickly if AI didn't do what you instructed or if it has done very well this time. You won't get all these if you are instructing AI or even a person to do something you don’t know.

When you are an AI tools manager your roles becomes focused on setting plans and visions, instructing AI what to do, inspecting outputs of AI and implement them. If you don’t know what you are managing that’s bad, and the only way to make yourself better on this and in leadership in general is to try to do things yourself sometimes so as to strengthen your taste on what’s good and bad.

I'm addition It gives you the power and “confidence” to intervene AI generated outputs on things which do not add up. If you have lost your touch this will be hard for you, as you will turn into a “accept” and “please fix it” guy.

3. Finally if you have covered well number 1 and 2, then by using AI to automate your activities it will enable you to build with high speed and hence beat most of your competitors and get more profit as an entrepreneur :)

A NOTE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS

—Practice intensively doing things manually. In college, this is the phase where you are supposed to be building your ability to stand up confidently on your own infront of others, and this mostly mean you have your skills and knowledge readily available anytime without depending on AI.

If you do more outsourcing to AI you will lose your confidence, and you know this more than anyone.

—Use intensively AI in your projects but as an entrepreneur.

Most people are slow in this, and if you manage to master and exploit more on this, it's when doors of success starts to open to you as an entrepreneur.

There is something which I bet most of us have experienced already, and to assure you of this I can start by giving you an example of the kind of things which I tell myself when I’m coding:

I have to finish up making these models first and then I’ll go to writing the codes for cron jobs

Yeah, I know that’s another field and you might not get it, but let me translate this for you:

I have to finish up <doing this easy task first> and then I’ll < “probably” do this hard task that I have been running away from, for days now>

Okay, I’ll be honest, I’m pretty good in dodging doing the hard tasks by doing the easy ones.

And funny enough If randomly you would have questioned me, why I haven’t done the second task, I would say: “Hey it’s on schedule already, and why are you asking me that”. I would probably defend with all my power, and it would perfectly make sense to me that there is nothing I’m running away from.

But that’s a lie, one of the many lies I have been telling myself for decades now, and yeah, they always come in different flavours, here! try these ones:

I have so many other important tasks which needs my attention, I’ll go to that one later

I have come up with a perfect schedule for this project, and on it this special task will be the final one to tackle, we need to give it all the time

We don’t have enough time for it, I’ll do it tomorrow

Wow!! so many lies.

If all these have always been lies, so what’s the truth?

By now I think it’s obvious already:

The truth is, that task which I have been unconsciously trying cleverly to push it to another time, another day, that task IS HARD TO ME.

Yes, it’s hard, if it was easy and as it’s important to me I would have done it already.

Now this might start to sound familiar to you.

Yes, that’s procrastination, and it mostly goes in stages of me not knowing I’m avoiding doing a task and finally consciously knowing I just find myself not wanting to do it (but I want to do it), and ultimately feel terrible of myself: “why am I being like this?, it has been weeks now”

Being hard is the only reason to why I avoid doing things I set out to do, it’s the main reason why I procrastinate.

But why?

1. Because I feel embarrassed in some sorts, of the failure experience I will have in not being able to do this task well

2. Because I don’t want to feel pain. I want a smooth, goody, comfortable life experience in whatever I’m doing. So, anything with traces of pain in it on default I want to run away from it

The real issue.

So, with all these I have come to see procrastination as a skill issue.

We procrastinate on things we are not good at.

Things which we are not good at tends to be hard for us to do them, as a result we avoid doing them, again because it’s embarrassing experiencing failure just because you don’t know how to do something well and on top of that it’s painful doing something which is hard to you.

This is why when you have two tasks one is hard and the other one is easy (you are good at), we tend to procrastinate on the hard one by doing the easy one.

You are not good at the things you are procrastinating on, if you were, you would have done them in seconds (it’s not “biggy” and infact if it’s important to you, why wait around?)

You are bad at the thing you are procrastinating on, as you don't have appreciable skills on doing the task well.

It's hard, it's difficult, it's new to me, I'm bad at it, it has a lot of friction, that's why I avoid it(procrastinate).

I can try to give few examples which shows this view of procrastination:

i. There is a chapter in math called calculus, it’s very hard, so as a result instead of reading it (and without that I will fail), I go to the 1 + 1 = 2 chapters

ii. I can’t keep in touch with my friends (this is every day, though I value them) as I’m not good at doing “small talks”

iii. I can’t do workouts everyday as I’m not good in handling the muscle pains associated with doing it

So, how can we solve procrastination?

The only way to solve your procrastination becomes for you to be good at what you are procrastinating about or simply to find tricky ways to make you do it without experiencing any kind of discomforts (if you want to avoid the responsibility of learning).

1. Become good at the thing you are procrastinating on.

I know this sounds counterintuitive, but that the only way to cure this. Infact if you will continue to be bad at doing this task it’s high likely you will continue to procrastinate on it, but once you start to know how to do it well it will reduce the likelihood of procrastinating on the same task again tomorrow, and in the future.

I stand with this firmly because if you take a close look on most things we are procrastinating on, there is always something we are not good at, there is always a skill missing. So, the only way around this requires us to learn that skill.

But unfortunately, not only the act of doing things which are hard to us is painful, even learning them has always been painful, and that’s how our brain works and there is nothing we can do about it. But I have prepared some remedies which can help us to bring comfort as we are trying to solve this procrastination issue:

i. You can’t avoid the pain, so create a habit of seeing discomforts in learning as a normal thing

ii. There is no shame in not being good at something

iii. If you get good at this you won’t procrastinate on it again, so this is worth an effort

Okay, now to be good on any task I think the general principles on how you can gain mastery on anything are applied here, and by this it also means ultimately, they will involve you getting your hands dirty by touching the things you have been avoiding all this time.

Here are the tricks I have found to work: i. You can start by “procrastinating” by reading or talking with others on how you can do this task well and efficiently. ii. Get down and start doing the thing, as that’s how you will get good at it and at the same time get the job done iii. Do more things like this, practice doing them by repetition as much as possible until they feel as simple as drinking tea (Robert Greene said this on the only chapter I read from his heavy Mastery book)

2. Finding tricky ways to make you do things without the need to experience discomfort

If this thing is really important to me and it needs to be done, and I have discovered that it’s because it’s hard to me that’s why I have been procrastinating on it, and I don’t find anything fruitful coming from learning this thing or I just want to save time, then here are some of the things which you can do to not procrastinate on this again: i. Pay someone to do it for you or trick one to do it for you for free, though this has another version which is using any kind of automation to do the work for you, example AI

ii. Just don’t do the task and move on with your life instead of wasting time on things you are afraid of, because they are hard.

iii. If doing this task yourself is really important now and in the future, you can still do it by finding ways to reduce the pain you experience while doing it, example doing small portions of it every day (less painful but you are doing the task and ultimately you will become fluent in doing it with time) . Any other ways of making you feel better while doing a hard task also works.

One thing to note here, you are not lazy, it’s just you don’t know how to do this thing well.

Don’t lie to yourself

Finally, I think the trick now if you want to take action on procrastination is to cultivate self-awareness skills as much as possible which will help you to know when you are procrastinating what is the hard thing and what is that skill you are missing here.

One of the core features of procrastination is telling ourselves lies that seems so real to an extent of: "I get fooled by lies I made myself”

But why do we lie to ourselves when procrastinating?

To protect our ego.

It's so embarrassing to admit we can't do something because it's hard for us.

We think we are these amazing people who can do anything, so to admit our lack of skills it kills us even to think about it.

But here is the deal which might cure us from the things we are procrastinating on:

It's okay if we are not good at something,

We can learn and improve.

Instead of just roaming around with a tonne of excuses saying you'll do it later (procrastination)

We should question our ego, why is it so big to an extent we can't even admit our own weaknesses?

Keep this in mind.

The next time you catch yourself avoiding a task, don’t ask “Why am I lazy?” Ask “What skill am I missing?”

Then decide will I learn it, or will I find a tricky way to do the task without pain?

For sure you are not doing enough, you are doing few superficial things to be your witnesses who will defend you when you say, “I tried my best”.

Just imagine this,

If we would have called every tech guy we know, connect with them, ask them to connect us with other tech guys, if we did that every day would you be lonely in this field? would you not being able to find the best programmers to learn more stuff from them?

If every weekend we tried to meet with college students and just strike a conversation, how many things would you have discovered which are real challenges to students? risefromCollege would have been a complete repository for all the things students need to know to succeed, but did you do that?

These are just few examples, there are so many things which you are great at walking your way out, trying all you can not to feel guilty that you didn’t give your all

You know this real irritates me, for God’s sake, if you would have done all the things you said you’ll do, if you didn’t lie to yourself that you are trying your best when you are not, if you would even for once try to go even close to your limits of doing everything you can, we wouldn’t being here talking about this.

But have you even realized why all this happen?

It’s because you are afraid.

I know you might try to deny this, but that’s the truth. If you didn’t know this, now you have to put it into your mind: You are afraid because things are hard,

You know that mental pain you experience so often when you are working with things which are hard, things with a lot of friction and complexity?

Yeah, that’s the one thing you are afraid of, because you want to relax all the time, so deep down you always try to avoid anything that’s bring that pain:

It’s hard to talk with people, you say to yourself “what if they see me as a nagging person”,

Those crappy JS syntaxes, man they are hard “where is IG, let me go there first”, that’s what you do.

You run away from pain, because you are afraid of discomfort, you don’t like it.

Okay but let me tell you one thing, for anyone who would want to accomplish what we have always desired, if he could only do the things you are afraid of just 100 times, if he could embrace pain as part of the process, surely he will surpass your level right now 1000 times, and if he was a college student, everyday working hard and actively on things which can bring success while still in college, for sure he will #risefromCollege.

Are you still worrying and fearing what you'll do after college? Will you be dumped too into the pool of graduates who have no job? Will what you are struggling with now in college be worthless after graduation? If you are thinking like that, let me add something more hurtful: there is a high likelihood this will happen to you, just like other graduates in the street.

Why? Because the approaches commonly used don't guarantee success immediately after graduation. Hmm, but why not so effective?

You'll learn more about this below but first let's start with the way you can escape this trap which most graduates have fallen into.

If you want to escape this trap, just do this one thing: Start the hustle in college. If you can even start to do it from the first moment you stepped into college, do it, but don't wait until you graduate. Whether you want to be employed or to do your own projects after graduation, start to work on this now, while you are in college.

For all those three years (or even more) in college, if you use them for this, it is more likely you'll be ahead and different from those who started this hustle immediately after college. Even if what you tried failed, what you'll gain will be much more valuable than just mere certificates.

Our core philosophy is simple: start during college, don't wait until you graduate to start.

The key is to start trying things which might lead to increasing your "employability" or developing your own project as a business while you're in college.

You #TryOutThings because we believe it's not a one-shot success thing. You make lots of attempts, and maybe one of your attempts might succeed and launch your career.

Even if they don't, you'll gain valuable experience and skills along the way—a far better investment than graduating without practical knowledge.

The key is to look for things which can lead to your breakthrough opportunity and try them.

For this to go well, there are other key ingredients you also need.

The first ingredient is skills together with knowledge. We call them #risingTools because these are the essential tools you should have in your backpack—tools you can use to grab any opportunity coming your way or fight any obstacle on your way. Without them, opportunities will just slip between your fingers easily. If you are not fully packed with these tools now, it's your task to go and learn all these.

The other ingredient is #Exposure: What you don't know so that you can know now. This can be eye-opening insights and perspectives—the aim is to equip your brain with a mindset that enables you to see opportunities where others haven't seen them or move away from the conventional mindset of most college students, anything which removes you from the dark.

Okay, to try to answer the question why the common approach of graduates doesn't work, first consider this general life model:

— For every success or anything we aspire to accomplish, there is a zero line where we begin the grind to reach there. To reach that level where we are satisfied, it often takes years with a lot of trials and full of uncertainties—luck won't be on your side all the time.

— Still, you'll need to work hard and creatively no matter what the circumstances—it's rare to have food come to your table where you have been relaxing.

Now, the reason most graduates have fallen into this trap and sometimes failed to embrace reality is that: as a recent graduate, the same life model principle still applies to you: it'll take years to feel happy that you went to college and got something from it. That's the fact and it's totally normal: "you are just beginning; things can't work out for you in a flash".

But we are still lamenting that we have graduated but without jobs. No, you'll get jobs but not that soon after graduation (if you are not that lucky)—but still this is with a precondition to keep the fight on every day.

— But what if we moved that zero line of starting back to your early days in college? What if, alongside your studies, you explored different opportunities—trying out new things to boost your employability or even start a project that could become your business?

— Even if you failed, you would still gain something—something that could prove useful instead of entering the world empty-handed. It would make your transition to life after college much smoother because you started sooner and not soon after graduation.

This is what we call risefromCollege, the mission you can embody specifically for starting your success while in college and not waiting until you graduate.

That's it.

Using software is an easy task for me. However, complicated an app might be, as long as I know what the use for it and I have a little background in it, it is just a matter of a couple of minutes, then I will figure out how to use it to get what I need. Kids’ stuff.

But for some people, this issue can become tough. You’ll find me surprised: "You can’t do even this? You gonna be kidding me."

I used to think this way for some time, but then I realized something—it wasn’t that these things were inherently difficult; they were just unfamiliar to them. Just like how I struggle to understand legal clauses in acts (I’ve been dealing with some registration processes lately), not because they’re impossible, but because I haven’t spent years immersed in them.

Tech, on the other hand, is second nature to me. I’ve used it for so long that it’s practically wired into my hands, eyes, and brain—that’s why it feels easy.

Other things are complicated for me because I never got immersed in them, or at least not that much.

Now here come people who are serious and targeting a certain goal by working on these projects they have. Projects sometimes are multidisciplinary, forcing those who are not experts in one area to hire someone else to do it for them.

But here is the sweet spot: there are other people who opt to try to do it themselves. But they are not experts in it? Yes, so they find someone to teach them, though others can be a little bit extreme and find resources to just teach themselves (me included, hahahaha). But ignore us—let’s focus on this guy who is looking for someone to teach them.

For these kinds of people, the skills you have honed for a long time now come to fruition, as you can be that guy who teaches this person in need and gets paid.

See how simple it is? You just have to figure out what that one special (and valuable) skill or knowledge you have and then find someone who might be willing to pay you to teach them.

Now, if we want to go in this direction, there are a few questions we need to ask ourselves first:

1. How will you be able to Identify Your “valuable” skill or create one from scratch?

2. How can you find your first paying student?

3. Where will you teach your students?

4. And how can you teach so as your students can actually learn (And come back for more)?

In the next part of this article, we’ll dive into these questions—and uncover a secret that most of us don’t talk about.

To be honest, I'm a super fan of the Batman movie series. In 2022, after waiting nearly two years for the release of The Batman, I rushed to the movie theatre on opening day just to watch it. Fan boy!

While there are many things I admire about Batman, one has always stuck with me the most: his utility belt—it's like it has everything for anything. Need to cut through metal? There's a razor for that. He wants to climb up a building? There's a tool for that. Sometimes I ask myself, "Hmm, how big is this belt to carry all these things?! Hahahaha"

Okay, let's say I'm the Batman in college with a mission to rise from college. Opportunities may be coming my way, or I'm actively seeking them; I may be facing challenges and obstacles in various ways. Yeah, luckily, I have my utility belt (The Batman 🕵️‍♀️). I can take out any tool and use it to grab these opportunities or look for them well—fight anything trying to bump into my face.

Let's get away from movie fantasies first. I call these tools #risingTools—tools which I can use to help me rise to success in whatever I'm working on. Let's say I meet up with a Spanish lady wanting a tour guide for 200k; I will take out my Spanish language speaking tool and use it to grab this opportunity. Or we can say luckily, I have met this guy with a lot of money, and he seems like he can invest in anyone with a good idea (and I have one). Then I will take out my good presentation tool to pitch my ideas well.

There are many tools which you can use in different situations like management skills, business world understanding, and more.

But unlike Batman, our utility belt is not always full of tools—we have to fill it with tools, and the only way to do that is by #buildUpSkills: learn many skills and knowledge which you think can be useful in your journey. Pile up these useful tools in your belt; you never know what challenge or opportunity can come your way, but if you have the right tools all the time, nothing can slip between your fingers just because you can't do something.

Yeah, I know. It's kind of my thing to come up with these cool names sometimes—for example, #moreExposure 😊. Cool, right?

I'm just joking around because it's nothing, and maybe I'm the only one who finds it cool while others don't, but that's not the most important thing for today. Today, we want to know what we really mean when we say #moreExposure in this riseFromCollege mission.

Before going deeper into this, we need first to get a clear understanding of the following two crucial points—I find these two as the main reasons for this #moreExposure concept.

1. The "groupthink" trap

We as students most of the time can't see opportunities that are just around the corner.

Why?

This is because most of us are trapped in this "groupthink" trap.

A trap that makes our view of the world limited to certain areas—preventing us from noticing what's beyond our view.

How can this happen?

In groups, whether friends, classmates, or social circles, there is always some kind of shared knowledge that arises and is ultimately acknowledged as the general truth—once most of the group members start to embrace it.

As a result, powerfully and collectively, we start to act or think as one based on this single "truth." We start to believe in the same thing and have this shared way of seeing the world, like collective glasses we all wear.

That's how we miss opportunities because we see through our peers' "truth" and not the "real truth."

The crazy part is that it's hard to notice this until you step outside of it. And the only way to step outside this groupthink is to put on a new pair of glasses—ones that reveal what your peers might not see.

In this scenario, your new pair of glasses are the things which your peers don't know about—the real truth. For example:

"You can't get a job that easily." → Try wearing the glasses that show you that, in the 21st century, building your personal brand online can be a powerful CV that gets you job offers without ever submitting a traditional resume.

"What's the point of talking to lecturers? That's so bookish." → Put on the glasses that reveal they have years of experience, valuable advice, and connections to guide you toward success.

It's not wise to reject everything believed by your peers, but it is wise to question things rather than just blindly accepting everything.

2. Regrets are always rooted in what we didn't know

I bet there are things you wish you could go back in time and do differently.

Ever asked yourself why?

It's because you now know something you didn't back then—something that could've changed everything.

I think by now you'll start to see that this game has always been all about what you know—meaning the more you know, the fewer regrets you'll have.

And yes, you may not be able to go into the future and find your future self to tell you what you messed up and what you wish you knew before. But still, you can minimize those future regrets you might have by making sure you reduce the number of things which you don't know now.

And that involves starting to learn now and build a future with fewer wishes of "I wish I knew this before."

Now what is #moreExposure?

Simply put: discover what you don't know but should know.

This is one of the things you need to attain your success while still in college and not wait until you graduate to start hustling from scratch (which can be frustrating, of course).

You get #moreExposure by reading books, consuming valuable content, engaging with insightful people—just use any means as long as they tell you something special you didn't know before.

This is the only way to get away from this groupthink trap, to reduce the amount of "I wish I knew this before" in your future.

With this, you will come to see opportunities in places where most of us didn't see them, you'll come to have the mindset which sets you apart from conventional ways of thinking of most college students—and again, you'll see more opportunities where most of us didn't see them.

This is the only way forward if you want to riseFromCollege.

We often hear vague, dreamy phrases like:

“I want to be my own boss; I won’t work for anyone.”

“When I’m the boss, I can wake up whenever I want.”

“I want to make a lot of money with my own business.”

But let’s be honest: these are just words spoken by those who don’t truly understand what self-employment really is.

If you’ve had thoughts like these, let me slow you down and tell you this:

Self-employment is not just “working on your own things.” There’s more to it.

First you start with nothing—no idea, no capital, and no reputation to build trust as a brand.

With zero experience in you, you are then required to make something from nothing.

And it should be something people really want.

Otherwise, you’ll be doomed.

Most of the things you try will fail. Only few of them will survive.

See? This is tough work, not a fantasy living.

You can’t sleep soundly knowing your revenue is going to hit zero next week if you will not have one more client to work with.

But still self-employment is not for everyone. In fact, it’s one of the most uncertain paths you can take. There’s deep work involved: hunting for customers, dealing with capital issues, fixing broken systems, managing employees who might steal from you, and so much more.

And if you’re not willing to go through this, there’s nothing wrong with choosing getting employed.

But if you feel this is your calling and you’re ready to give it your all, there’s a way to tackle it with confidence:

You need to build skills to handle anything, try new things daily and adopt the right mindset in whatever you do.

These will be your foundation for executing tasks effectively every day.

And one thing which is for sure is that you’ll learn as you go, improve with time, and iterate your way forward.

And the key is to consistently create products or services that people genuinely want.

That’s how you eventually succeed at self-employment.

It’s not easy, and luck rarely plays a part.

If you’ve realized this and still want self-employment to be your path, here’s a tip: start now, while you’re still in college.

College gives you the advantage of experimenting and making mistakes without as many consequences. You can have multiple trial runs before graduation.

And when graduation comes, even if nothing has worked out, I bet you’ll have learned so much that you’ll have a disproportional advantage when it’s time for round two.

"Hey bro, do you have any research title?" "I'm just looking for that one simple research—few weeks and I'm done. Do you also happen to have sample reports of previous research?"

I've noticed these kinds of words many times whenever final-year students are about to start their research projects. The theme is almost always: "I want to make things easier for me." Yes, I get it. You're tired, you just want to finish college in peace, and you don't want any more challenges to torment you.

But what if, in trying to avoid challenges, you're missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?

Here's Why:

1. Real Experience

By choosing a challenging and meaningful research topic, you'll gain valuable experience in problem-solving. Tackling real-world challenges forces you to think critically and develop skills that are directly applicable after graduation. While easier projects may seem tempting, but they may not have equal weight with the output of skills you might get if you consider investing in your research project.

2. Potential Commercial Success

If your research has a commercial theme and becomes successful, it can attract potential investors or even provide you with a business idea to pursue after graduation. This transforms your project into more than just a tool for earning good grades—it becomes the launchpad for your career.

3. Academic Recognition

Even if your research isn't commercially oriented, it could still catch the attention of your lecturers or academic institutions for further development. This could lead to postgraduate opportunities or collaborations, broadening your academic horizons.

4. Networking Opportunities

A strong research project can boost your personal brand. When you've worked on something impactful, people will notice and be more inclined to collaborate with you. Compare that to the shallow impression left by someone who chose an easy project just for quick grades.

But there are risks too

It's true that aiming for a complex research project can increase the risk of not finishing on time or failing to gather meaningful data. But these risks are manageable if you work smart and stay committed. Remember, even inconclusive data is a valid outcome in research. Your goal is to demonstrate the effort, critical thinking, and scientific process behind your work—not just to confirm a hypothesis.

I was an academic prefect in primary school, I think it was around standard six.

Yeah, I don’t know maybe the leadership system was a little bit complicated for us kids back then, as the funny thing is I didn’t know what being an academic prefect meant at the time until we started to use the word “academic” instead of “taaluma” in secondary school.

Ooh my God I was an academic prefect, what a great role I had—but I didn’t know that. what a bummer!

You know, these are just one of the funny moments we get when we try to remember our past. I bet you also had memories of these and maybe other craziest ones than mine.

Speaking of these makes me see how now it has been a long time since primary school, and many things have happened; as a result most of the time I just remember the faces of my former classmates when I meet them and not their names—though by now they have started to be cranky (hahaha me too!!).

But let’s be honest on this too—I’ll start first: you know who I know the most now, and I do go to their places—make a lot of phone calls with are my family and “few” relatives, my co-workers, my neighbours and very few close friends I had in primary school, secondary school and even in college. The rest I don’t know how they are doing maybe we will catch up one day in the future and reunite our relationships. What remains of them is just a vague memory—ooh! There was this guy and that, who did this and so and so. They don’t matter anymore.

The sad thing when I think about this is that it’s like I have incurred an emotional cost for nothing—as my actions and thoughts were anchored to other people in school—in a direction to portray something to others, to mean something: “See guys, I have a cool phone now”, “What am doing will be considered stupid”, “I don’t want to appear bookish going to professors office to ask them few life questions”. But now we are not together anymore—there is no one to see me, there is no one to be afraid of—that’s a loss.

We do most of the things while considering other people who just after three years of college we will part ways and we may not even be able to keep in touch. Everyone will continue with their life.

Furthermore, in the future you’ll get a job, you might shift jobs, you move places—by this your life changes—you become a new person along the way, the past just starts to fade away and few moments remains.

You’ll be forgotten.

Live and do everything for the sake of you and not for the eyes of others.

There are too many "unpredictables."

Things happen that you didn't expect.

Some of them you can do something to change, but most of them you will never even come close to having the authority to do that.

You'll then be disappointed too much.

You can be right, but you are wrong; you can be wrong, but you are right—it's chaos.

You'll never know the ultimate truth.

You'll not be happy all the time.

And as funny as it is too, something bad can happen to you anytime soon.

You never know.

That's the RANDOMNESS OF LIFE—you have to embrace it and be happy with it.

As nothing is tasting as good as the taste of uncertainty.

—— - We often hold the misconception that life follows a predictable path, especially during and after college. As students, we may think we have everything—time, opportunities, youth. However, what we don't know is that what we've been fantasizing about every day will never come true, if it comes not by 100% and if it is, it can be taken away any time.

—— - Embracing life's uncertainties provides a perspective that helps manage expectations and develop resilience. By focusing on controllable aspects and embracing randomness, students can better prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

—— - Realizing this can lead to happiness in accepting the "unplanned" and courage to work hard on things that you have the chance to change—the things that are in your control because that will always be the only gift that will never be taken away from you.

There is a time we may wish for that day; the last day in college where we won't be needed to do all these tiring tests, homework, and agonizing endless reading.

Ugh! It really is a pain to keep doing this. The more days go towards our graduation, the happier we get as we start to see that the tough life we've been living is coming to an end.

Okay, let's say you have graduated. Congratulations! As expected, graduates, we don't study anymore; we just do our job. And if you find anyone doing this, it's like finding someone coming from the bush (oh! reading, real? I think we forgot about that from the day we did our last exam).

Yes, and I guess that might sound good somehow, as now you will get the free time to relax and enjoy life with your cash (welcome to the team).

To be a good founding member of our team, there are a few tricks you should know:

1. Know how to do your job, know it well so that you can do it "with your eyes closed"

2. Never put yourself in situations where you are bombarded with school facts.

If you handle these two well, cheers...

• Knowing the ins and outs of your job, both theoretically and practically, to do a better job.

• Updating yourself with school facts you had, as you will surely forget everything with time.

• Updating yourself with new facts of your career so as you can be ready to capture any opportunities.

• Be ready for any changes in your career at any time, as you have invested in skills in your brain which can help you survive.

I promise you this will be endless, so you better start to get used to it now, while you are still a student.

I bet there are things you wish you could go back in time and do differently.

Ever asked yourself why?

It’s because you now know something you didn’t back then—something that could’ve changed everything.

So, this is all about what you know—meaning the more you know, the fewer regrets you’ll have.

Sounds cool, right? But the past is gone, and you can’t change it.

Now what if you could visit your future, collect the lessons and insights you’ll wish you had, and use them today?

How amazing would that be?

But let’s face it—you don’t have a time machine for you to do that.

Or do you?

But what if your time machine is right here:

The books you can read.

The people you can talk to.

All the tools you can use to learn the things you don’t know yet—so as to avoid future regrets because you didn't know something.

Because let’s be real: regrets are always rooted in what we didn’t know.

So why not start learning now and build a future with fewer wishes of “I wish I knew this before”?

Now, that would be the coolest thing of all.

Yes, that girl is cool. She has accomplished a lot, while here I am with a mere handful of followers, and no one really knows what I'm doing. Though I won't admit it, I think this is envy—possibly.

Thinking clearly, it's mainly because I haven't accomplished as much as she has, and there's no way I can do that overnight.

Okay, Nyanda, maybe you're overthinking this. What might actually be troubling you is the deep desire you have to reach your ideal level of accomplishment—the one you've always envisioned for your life. Watching the days go by without achieving it feels hard, especially when you see others (like her) reaching their goals.

Yes, it's true. You are absolutely right about this.

I think even you, my friend reading this right now, might relate to this feeling. But here's the bitter truth we all already know: we won't get what we want tomorrow.

Trying to force success often leads to bad consequences. It can drive us to take shortcuts or make poor decisions. Worse, failing to achieve our goals in this rushed mindset can lead to frustration or even depression.

Let's reflect on this together:

• President Samia didn't enter politics and become President in a few months.

• Bakhresa, born in 1949, didn't turn Azam into a prominent brand in 90s.

• Alikiba, one of the greatest singers, didn't make a hit with his first song.

But why, why, why is it so hard for us to accept this? We have clear examples from the people we admire, yet we struggle to acknowledge that it took them years to reach where they are. Maybe we're too greedy for success. If that's the case, it's a bad sign. Or perhaps we're just pressured by the success we see others enjoying right now.

Let's accept this once and for all: it will take time. But it's not just about time. It's about effort—consistent effort—towards what we aspire to accomplish.

I understand we all have goals. We have projects we want to see succeed. But removing this "rush" is also important. We need to develop the ability to wait while continuing to work steadily towards our objectives.

Look closely at the success stories we admire. They all show traces of one key trait: consistency. Successful people don't just work every day; they work with the right mindset and follow well-thought-out strategies.

In the next part of this essay, I'll introduce a strategy specifically designed for college students with projects or goals they aspire to achieve. It's a simple yet powerful approach that keeps you consistent, motivated, and moving closer to your dreams, one step at a time—without the pressure of rushing.
